black smoke is running rich and an emission issue typically related to an o2 sensor or a cat puffs of black soot on WOT are generally just carbon being expelled. burning oil is blue smoke and white smoke is steam and implies coolant or water making it's way into the combustion cycle. Before that, BMW always recommended regular fluid changes from brake fluid, to coolant, differentials & transmissions. IMO, I would change the transfer case oil @ 40-50K (I did mine at 70K); The ZF transmission between 75-80K, as a drain & fill, The differentials at about the same miles.
